Sporting Chance initiative nets vital lockdown funds for club

Bromsgrove Editorial 28th May, 2020   0

LADY Luck was smiling on three Bromsgrove Sporting fans who scooped £450 between them in the Rouslers’ first Sporting Chance draw.

The top prize of £300 went to Andrew Clarke, Matthew Kimberley was drawn second and won £100 and the third prize of £50 went to Chris Curtis, who generously gave it back to the club as a donation.

The draw was made last Tuesday by manager Brendan Kelly via a video link from his back garden.

More than 100 supporters have already signed up to Sporting Chance, which was launched to raise funds during the lockdown when no football is being played but overheads are still coming in.

Sporting Chance costs £10 per entry per month, paid on the 15th by standing order.

Meanwhile, Sporting have decided that, as of next season, they will not field a team in the Midland Floodlit Youth League.

The club now has a very busy and active Colts set-up with the ability and infrastructure to run teams at under 18s level and an academy providing football opportunities for 16 to 18-year-olds – promoting both football and education.

The successful and hardworking under 18s manager Alan Horton has been there since the beginning and now, along with his coaching team, has decided to venture into a new challenge with Bromsgrove Sporting Ladies.

Bromsgrove Sporting chairman Mike Burke said: “It has been a difficult decision to give up the floodlit team as it has always been successful, but we feel that, with the provision available for under 18s with both the academy and the Colts, it was time to focus on something new.

“I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the under 18s, particularly Alan.”

Horton commented: “On behalf of Bromsgrove Sporting under 18s, I would like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to manage the boys!

“I also want to thank my coaches over the floodlit years and a massive thank you to the BSSS (Bromsgrove Sporting Supporters Society) for all their support in training and registration fees and match-night support, particularly to Joe Amess, Charlie Rudge, Maria Murphy and Victor Aguera.

“It was been a dream come true for me and I hope, with the same support from the Club and the BSSS, I will have success with the ladies team and take them to the next level.”
