Smith: Bromsgrove Sporting must be up for the remaining 17 'cup finals'

MANAGER Paul Smith has stressed Bromsgrove Sporting have 17 ‘cup finals’ left as they bid for Midland League Premier Division glory.

The Rouslers returned to the summit of the table on Saturday following their 2-1 victory away to Rugby Town and Coleshill Town’s 1-0 home demise to fellow promotion rivals Worcester City.

Smith’s side could have moved four points clear on Tuesday night had it not been for their game in hand at Lye Town falling foul of the weather.

But the Sporting gaffer did not wish to dwell on that disappointment and quickly turned his attentions to tomorrow’s (Saturday) trip to third-from-bottom Shawbury United who play at the SBS Stadium in Ludlow.

Sporting won the previous meeting 3-1 at the Victoria Ground back in December but Smith is expecting a much tougher contest against a side which has picked up ten points from their last six games.

“I had them watched at the weekend and they are a completely different prospect to when we faced them earlier in the season,” he said.

“It took a last minute goal from Westfields to beat them 3-2 which proves that.

“We are at the business end of the season and if we do not play well we will get turned over.

“It’s our first time at this level so to be in the position we are in is tremendous.

“We have 17 ‘cup finals’ left so it is important we are at it every single game.”

Smith is expected to take a full strength squad to Shawbury but he will be without Sam Wills and Reece Hewitt who have decided to take some time out from football.

With Ahmed Ali returning to action at Rugby following his release from prison last Friday, Smith added he would be the ideal replacement for Wills and revealed he had submitted two seven-day approaches for wingers to find a replacement for Hewitt.

“We will keep Sam’s and Reece’s registrations and hopefully the pair of them can get the bug back for playing football,” said the Sporting boss.

Meanwhile, The Standard asked Smith about his offer of a contract which chairman Mike Burke revealed at the supporters’ forum last month had been tabled.

“As everyone was aware, the contract has been with Mike’s solicitors and I felt I would not be exercising my due diligence if I did not send it to my solicitors either,” said Smith.

“Once it comes back to me there is a meeting planned on Tuesday evening when I will go through the contract with the board.”
