Smith at the double as Fairfield thrash Earlswood

FAIRFIELD Villa came away from Earlswood Town with all three points after two goals from Lewis Smith in a straightforward 4-1 win.

Coming into the game with just one loss in the last eight games, and with Saturday’s hosts bottom of the table and winless in the previous nine games, Villa were fully confident of a win.

Even with eight players out of contention, Smith slotted into the visitor’s forward line with a start also for Matthew O’Beirne in midfield.

Despite their league standing, the hosts had the first attempt of the game, calling keeper Josh Goddard into action to tip away for a corner.

A couple of half-chances followed as Fairfield attempted to get a foothold in the game, but Dan Ludlow and Alex Dugmore were only able to send their efforts off-target.

It was clear that the contest wasn’t going to be as straightforward as anticipated, especially when Ellis Blakemore was denied by the alert Earlswood keeper.

A goal before half-time changed that though, Blakemore jinked his way through and centred the ball for Alfie Bloomer to sidefoot a 15th goal of the season.

Smith then latched onto a pass and fired into the net moments after the break to assume control for the visitors in the game.

He doubled his tally and notched Fairfield’s third on the hour mark to make sure of the win, as the game descended into a scrappy affair.

There was still time in the game for Villa to score a fourth, arriving from substitute Jarred Hill from close-range, although a clean sheet was out of the question when Earlswood struck in the 88th minute.

It claimed a 16th win of the season for Fairfield as they head into the final stretch of the season, starting with a second game in a week against Earlswood at the Recreation Ground (3pm) on Saturday.

Elsewhere at the club, club photographer and committee member Paul Smith has given a generous donation to the club in purchasing a new PA system at the Rec, whilst it has been announced that a race night is to take place.

The annual club fundraiser held at the club house is to take place on Saturday 13th April with a 7:30pm start, which will help fund the club for the forthcoming season.
