Narrow defeat ends Droitwich Ladies unbeaten run

Bromsgrove Editorial 12th Dec, 2014 Updated: 17th Oct, 2016   0

DROITWICH Spa Ladies unbeaten run came to an end as an early strike proved to be enough for Kidderminster who held on for a 1-0 win.

The home side had the majority of the possession, but a lack of quality in the final third let their Worcestershire rivals off the hook.

There was success for Droitwich Spa men, though, as two of their sides both claimed narrow wins. Liam Hines took his scoring tally to 12, with a hat-trick as the 3rds edge Leamington 7-6.

The 13 goal thriller also saw goals from Luck Wicks, Dan Welch, Shaun Laight and Charlie Smith as they notched up their third win of the season.

The early exchanges saw Leamington have the first chance, but it was Droitwich who scored the opener as Hine rounded the keeper before putting the ball away.

He doubled his advantage with another close range finish before Leamington pulled a goal back after a long ball was deflected behind Spa’s defence.

Matthew Knowles was beat two more times as Leamington went ahead in the first half. But a quick fire double from Spa turned the game around, with Wicks and Welch hitting the target.

Leamington hit back with another, but Hine restored Spa’s two goal advantage with his third before Laight struck.

The visitors refused to give in as they netted to get within one goal with eight minutes remaining, but Droitwich dug deep to see out the win.

Droitwich Spa Men 1sts were also involved in a pulsating encounter as Andy Griffiths strike clinched his side a 3-2 win over Evesham Men 1sts.

A very evenly balanced start saw little chances, but it was Droitwich who finally broke the dead lock when Marcus Claytor scored from a penalty corner.

After Claytor missed the chance to go two up, a defensive error gave Evesham the equaliser after Droitwich keeper George Roberetshaw parried straight to their attacker.

Claytor went close again just before the break, but he did not have to wait long in the second half to get his second after receiving Griffiths’ pass.

Droitwich remained on the front foot as Simon Baines and Craig Smith were both presented with good opportunities before Griffiths added a third.

A frantic final ten minutes could have seen a goal go either way, but the visitors held on to leapfrog Evesham in the league.

Meanwhile, Droitwich Spa u13s maintained their impressive run of form with two wins and a draw in the Worcestershire tournament last Sunday.

Goals from George Hutchocks and John Phillips saw them beat Bromsgrove B 2-1 before they were held to a 1-1 draw by Kings Heath after Phillips gave his side the lead.

But Spa made sure they saved their best until last as they ran out 3-1 winners against Bromsgrove A, with goals coming from Phillips, Fernando Prendiville and Sam Radford.
