Mixed fortunes for Bromsgrove men after nerve-jangling contests

THERE was drama at Bromsgrove Tennis Club as their Men’s B team suffered the narrowest of defeats to Belbroughton A.

Previous results against the Stourbridge side suggested it would be a close contest and so it proved on Wednesday night.

Each pair of Steve Jones with Matt Smith, Phil Boardman with Ash Rutter and Jeth Tomlinson with Trevor Errington won a rubber and lost one to make the match score 3-3.

However, it was Belbroughton who edged the Division Three encounter as they were 8-7 up in sets.

Bromsgrove C team were also involved in a tight battle at Boughton, but this time they came out on top.

Played on the Boughton grass courts with their very unpredictable bounce it was a difficult match for the Bromsgrove players to get into any rhythm.

Jack Walters with Pete Morris won both their contests, recording an impressive 6-0, 6-0 win over the Boughton third pair and beating the second pair in two sets.

John Casey with Tim Wright also beat the third pair convincingly but lost to the Boughton first pair. Finally John Dudek with Alistair Liddle went down in both their rubbers.

Again the result needed a countback on games won with rubbers and sets equal, but fortunately it was Bromsgrove’s day as they just took the victory.

However, only taking eight points out of a possible maximum of 14 means their promotion hopes are dashed.

Elsewhere, Bromsgrove Ladies D team took on Droitwich D in Division Seven and came away 4-2 winners.

In a close match, which saw a number of three set battles Bromsgrove managed to clinch the vital points.

Cynthia Colley with Jenny Buckley won both their rubbers, while Lesley Hodson with Ros Cooke and Sarah Davies with Sue Murray both had a victory and a loss.
