Mexican rival's disqualification hands Rednal triathlete world championship crown

A REDNAL woman has been crowned champion of her age group at the World Championships in Holland after her Mexican rival was disqualified.

Anne Hughes competed in the 60-64yrs category at the championship in Rotterdam where she finished second.

However, the 64-year-old was given top spot just days later after Villegas Leyva was stripped of her gold medal.

The reasons for disqualification have yet to be confirmed.

Success for Anne, a retired teacher who spent 35 years at Bournville Secondary School, came after she won the European Championships in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Anne first took up the sport three years ago and has been coached by her husband Dave, an LVRC National Criterium Championships winner for cycling, and her son Luke.

From never taking part in triathlons, she has yet to lose in competitive events.
