History-making Worcestershire Girls' U14s side into national semi-finals

A SUPERB first half strike from Laura Brown made history as it clinched a 1-0 victory for the Worcestershire County Schools’ FA Girls’ U14 team over Staffordshire on a cold Wednesday evening.

Not only did it book the county side’s place in the semi-finals of the English Schools’ FA Inter-County Cup, but it ensured the Worcestershire Girls’ U14s team because the first from the county – male or female – to reach the national last four in any of this series of age group competitions.

In what was a very competitive game, Worcestershire were superb as they gave the Staffordshire girls only scraps of possession and pinned them in their own half through fast passing and movement and a high press when Stafford did manage to hold on to the ball.

Staffordshire had their moments as their wide players threatened, but the Worcestershire defence stood firm whilst they also looked menacing on the counter-attack.

The only surprise was the fact the second half did not yield a goal in a match, played at Littleton FC, which was a superb advert for girls’ football.

Gary Barrell’s side will now look forward to the semi-final at Redditch United against Lancashire on Thursday, February 9 (2pm).

This a great platform for the girls attending the Gothia World Cup in July and there are still fantastic opportunities for sponsorship of this event. Please email [email protected] or [email protected] for details.

The Worcestershire U14 girls are in action again today (Thursday) against Greater Manchester.
