CAPTAIN Matt Kirkham has spoken of his pride after his Bromsgrove side thrashed Wem Tennis Club 6-0 to progress in the regional competition.

After winning the Hereford and Worcester AEGON title, the Men’s A team were handed a tough draw in the knock-out stages against the Shropshire champions.

But the team consisting of Kirkham, Adam Dudek, Jaspal Saimbi and junior Ollie Stratford, rose to the challenge.

The opening round of singles saw some tight contests, with Saimbi coming through victorious after a long three-set battle.

This gave Bromsgrove a 4-0 lead before the two doubles matches, which they also won.

Skipper Kirkham said: “I’m really proud of the way all the team dug deep to pull off some great wins.

“We’re now looking forward to the next round and putting Bromsgrove on the national stage.”

Meanwhile, the pick of the bunch from the ladies sides’ results came from C team who strengthened their hold on Division Five with a resounding 6-0 win away at Ombersley.

With just two matches left, they are looking strong favourites to take the title and get promoted as all three pairs cruised to straight-set wins.

But there was disappointment for the Ladies E team took on Bewdley D and were pipped by four games with rubbers and sets even.

Alison Douglas with Carol Cornellison led the way winning both their contests, but Bewdley fought hard in the other rubbers to deny Bromsgrove victory.

Elsewhere, the Ladies D team suffered a 5-1 defeat to Fladbury, but the scoreline did not reflect how close the match was with a number of three-set battles and tie-breaks.
