BROMSGROVE E prevailed 6-4 in an inter-club meeting with Bromsgrove F to start their Herefordshire & Worcestershire Winter League Women’s Division Eight East campaign on a high.
The duo of Isabelle Bracknall and Claire Carter put the F side in front with a straight-sets win over Nicola Calthorpe and Rosalind Cooke 7-6, 7-5, before Carol Cornelissen and Alison Douglas hit back to win 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 against Susan Corfield and Jane Corbett.
Cornelissen and Douglas were unable to get the better of Bracknall and Carter in match three however, losing a three-setter 0-6, 7-6, 6-7, to set up a tense finale in the final match.
Bromsgrove E’s Calthorpe and Cooke then kept their cool to breeze to a 6-4, 6-0 victory against Corfield and Corbett to take the bulk of the points and win the contest overall.
In the Men’s Division Ten East, Barnt Green C sit top after the opening weekend following a resounding 10-0 win against Barnt Green D.
The C team eased to straight-sets victories in each of their four matches, with Paul and Sam Gordon winning the opener 6-1, 6-2 against Malcolm Johnson and Daniel Paterson, backed up by a 6-0, 6-0 win against David Llewelyn and Colin White.
Hammad Ahmad and Andrew Yair won 6-1, 6-2 against Llewelyn and White in match two, with no time to rest before beating Johnson and Paterson 6-1, 6-1 in match three.
Elsewhere in the division, Droitwich F edged Droitwich G, much in part to the efforts of Jonathan Carter and Daniel Ballard.
They won both of their matches, edging Mark Woodget and Mark Alexander 3-6, 7-5, 6-2 in the opener before easing to a 6-1, 6-1 win against Roger Satterthwaite and Jack Roberts.
The alternate Droitwich F partnership of Mark Venables and Philip Rhodes were unable to enjoy similar success, going down 6-4, 6-7, 4-6 to Satterthwaite and Roberts, before losing 4-6, 2-6 to Woodget and Alexander.
