Craig Gibbons 28th Feb, 2017

BROMSGROVE Mixed C’s hopes of securing promotion from Division Four East of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League took a dent following a losing draw to Kidderminster A.

The wind and rain caused all sorts of problems as in the first round of matches Voitek Niedzwiedz with Veronika Kumherova were just edged out in a second set tie break after holding set points to level the match.

Di Inchley with Trevor Errington had trouble adapting to the court conditions and lost their opening set 4-6 before storming back to win the next sets 6-0, 7-5 to take victory.

It was reversed in the second round as Niedzwiedz and Kumherova strolled to an easy two-set win 6-4, 6-1, but Inchley and Errington lost 3-6, 1-6.

This gave Kidderminster the bonus win points and moved them to the top of the table.

Bromsgrove moved up to third and have one game left to claim promotion.

Elsewhere, the Ladies G also had a close match against local rivals David Lloyd Bromsgrove D in Division Ten East.

The pairs of Claire Carter with Sue Corfield and Di Horton with Fay Gileswere involved in some epic three-set battles.

Carter and Corfield opened with a convincing 6-1, 6-3 win but Horton and Giles just couldn’t get going and lost 6-0, 6-2.

It was a reversal of fortunes in the second round as two long three-set contests ended with Horton and Giles fighting back to win after losing the opening set but Carter and Corfield lost after winning the opening set.

This left the rubber score at 2-2 and set score at 5-5 but David Lloyd took the win on games won by 45-40.
