Bromsgrove Men's C end winter season in style

BROMSGROVE Men’s C completed their Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League Division Five East campaign with a 3-1 win over Worcester E to leapfrog them into second place.

Captain John Casey was sidelined with an Achilles injury so Trevor Errington stepped in to partner Tim Wright and support the regular pairing of Tim Roland with Pete Morris.

The match opened with Morris and Roland taking a straightforward 6-0, 6-4 win.

The other rubber was much closer as Wright and Errington eventually went down to the Worcester first pair 6-1, 2-6, 4-6.

After the turn round both sides battled hard in two three-set matches.

It didn’t look good for Bromsgrove as both pairs lost their opening sets before fighting back to victory.

For Morris and Roland it was really tight as they won 6-7, 6-3, 7-6.

Wright and Errington won a little more comfortably 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Captain Casey said: “It was a great fightback to get the win.

“After being promoted last year we were expecting a hard season and I’m really pleased with the way the whole squad has pulled together to give us a comfortable finish close to the top of the table.

“I don’t think we’ll go up in second place as Wall Heath in third place have matches in hand and they are not that far behind.”

Elsewhere, the Ladies A ended their Division One season with victory over Leominster A.

Again it was a game of two halves as the Leominster second pair were no match for Bromsgrove.

Jilly Whitehead with Veronika Kumherova beat them 6-0, 6-0 and Tina Manning with Sally Franks won 6-2, 6-1.

It was a different story against the opposition first pair though as a long opening battle saw Manning and Franks lose out in three sets 7-5, 0-6, 4-6.

Whitehead and Kumherova lost 2-6,1-6.

However, the extra set won by Manning and Franks gave Bromsgrove the win who move up to second in the table.

But they could yet be squeezed out of the top two as third placed Stourbridge have a game in hand.

Captain Franks said: “We’re guaranteed third place and if results go our way could hold onto second which is a great result in this tough division.

“The squad and players we’ve called up when needed have all put in a lot of effort and fight to put us among the top teams in Herefordshire and Worcestershire.”
