BROMSGROVE’S Men’s B team ended the winter season as Division Three runners-up after going down 3-1 to league leaders David Lloyd Worcester.
Knowing a 4-0 win would secure them the title, they got off to the perfect start as Steve Jones with Ollie Stratford went on to win the opening rubber.
However, Worcester showed why they were top as Ash Rutter and Phil Boardman were edged out in a close three-set battle before both pairs lost their final contests.
On a positive note, the points gained lifted Bromsgrove up to second in the table.
Captain Jones said: “‘We knew it was a big ask to beat Worcester DL 4-0, but we weren’t far off.
“Taking the runners up spot is some consolation for what’s been a good winter for Bromsgrove.”
Bromsgrove Ladies D and E teams begun the summer season of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire League against each other in Division Seven.
Yvonne Priestman with Alison Dougles for the E team won both their rubbers in two sets before the pair of Naomi Moore with Sue Corfield batted hard in two long three-set games to claim a win and a loss.
The third pair of Claire Hancock with Claire Andrews showed how small the margin between the two teams is – despite losing both rubbers – as they pushed their opposite pair all the way in a close three-set battle.
For the D team, the pairs of Ros Cooke with Lesley Hodgson, Jenny Buckley with Jane Corbett and Carol Cornellisen with Annabel Whitmore won one rubber each.
This left the score at 3-3 but the E team took the winning bonus points as they won 8-7 on sets.
