BROMSGROVE Men’s A team got their Herefordshire and Worcestershire Winter League Division Two campaign off to a flying start with the 4-0 trouncing of rivals David Lloyd Bromsgrove.

In his first match as captain, Ollie Stratford teamed up with 13-year-old Joe Hart in one of the club’s youngest pairings to play for the A team.

The final contest saw them go down 5-1 in the third and deciding set before an amazing comeback secured the rout for Bromsgrove.

The David Lloyd pairing of James Troth and Alex Martin failed to make the most of their opportunities, allowing Stratford and Hart go gain confidence and save a number of match points to win 7-5 and complete the clean sweep.

The senior Bromsgrove pair of Adam Dudek with Steve Halfpenny also beat Troth and Martin in three sets and followed up with a straight forward two-set win against Richard Garbett and Mark Tanner.

Captain Stratford said: “A good win against strong local rivals is always a great way to start the season.

“Joe showed he is worthy of an A team place and showed a level of composure and maturity way better than his older opponents.”

The Men’s D got one over on the Men’s E team in their Division Seven East opening by cruising to a 4-0 victory.

Twelve-year-old Tom Round made his debut for the D team, partnering veteran Trevor Errington.

They opened with a hard-fought 7-6, 7-5 win over Paul Douglas with Mark Wilson before beating Rob Kindon with Tom Andrews 6-4, 6-0.

Aaron Oakes with Brian Taylor completed the victory with an opening 6-3, 6-4 win against Kindon and Andrews and a 6-1, 6-4 win against Douglas and Wilson.

Captain Errington said: “Tom stepped up to the mark after his promotion to the D team and played some great shots.”

In Division Five East, the Ladies D were narrowly beaten by Halesowen B on games won.

A close match saw each pair of Beccy Smith with Steph Armstrong and Marie Hackett with Anne Simper winning one rubber, leaving the match balanced at 2-2 and sets equal at 4-4.

However, Halesowen took the bonus points win as they won 35-33 on games.

Elsewhere, the Ladies G went down 4-0 to Barnt Green B in Division Ten East.
