BROMSGROVE Ladies D narrowly missed out on promotion from Division Seven East of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League despite claiming a 5-1 victory over Ombersley C.

In their final game of the season, Ros Cooke with Lesley Hodson won both rubbers but only after a tough three-set match against their opposite first pair.

Carol Cornelissen with Yvonne Priestman at third pair also won both encounters while Jane Corbett with Sue Forrest opened with a win but then lost to the Ombersley first pair.

The result left Bromsgrove equal on points with second placed Fladbury who secured the last promotion spot by virtue of sets won.

Speaking on behalf of the Ladies C team, Corbett said: “It’s been a great season with some enjoyable tennis, but the whole squad is disappointed to lose out on promotion by such a narrow margin.”

The Men’s C team also tasted promotion heartache as they finished two points behind second place Droitwich Spa B despite cruising to a 6-0 victory over Belbroughton B in Division Five East.

The pairs of Voitek Niedzwiedz with Trevor Errington and Tim Roland with Pete Morris both complete straightforward victories in two sets.

The only close match was a tense three-set battle for the first pair of Tim Wright with John Casey against Belbroughton’s second pair.

Despite their emphatic win, Bromsgrove narrowly missed out on securing promotion to Division Four East.

Captain Casey said: “After being hit by a number of injuries at the start of the season which meant we didn’t get off to a great start, the squad has put in some great performances, including three 6-0 wins.

“We’ll be back looking for promotion next year.”
