Bromsgrove Ladies A miss out on title glory but promotion joy for Mixed C

BROMSGROVE Ladies A narrowly missed out on securing the Herefordshire and Worcestershire Summer League Division One title following their losing draw to Pershore.

In a nail-biting end to the season, the clash hung on just a couple of points in two critical tie breaks but both went to Pershore.

Despite this, Rachael Mack with Jill Witcomb, Tina Manning with Sally Franks and Hannah Weston with Kelly Kenward each won a rubber to leave the match result at 3-3.

However, the count-back on sets won gave the bonus win points to Pershore.

This meant Bromsgrove, Pershore and Stourbridge ended the season on 70 points but the title went to Pershore on the head-to-head results.

Captain Franks said: “We’re gutted to have come so close to winning the title and just missing out.

“The whole team fought hard and Hannah and Kelly playing up from the B team put in a great performance for us.

“Despite being pipped at the last minute it’s made us even more determined to do well in the winter season.”

There was better news for the Mixed C team as they earned promotion from Division Four East with a great 4-0 win over Pershore B.

Knowing they needed to win at least two rubbers to secure promotion, the first round was a tense affair for Bromsgrove.

The first pair of Di Inchley with Trevor Errington fought out a hard three-set match against Pershore’s firsts.

It culminated in a tie break which Inchley and Errington took control of early on and despite Pershore coming back, the match ended in a Bromsgrove victory by 6-3, 5-7, 7-6.

The husband and wife duo of Linda and John Casey opened up with a comfortable 6-2, 6-3 win.

The second round saw the same pattern as Inchley and Errington won 6-3, 6-4 and the Casey’s won another epic three-set contest 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 to give Bromsgrove a clean sweep.

Delighted captain John Casey said: “It’s been a great season and the whole squad, including tonight’s four plus Connie Wedelich, Voitek Niedzwiedz, Tim Roland, Linda Woolley and Veronika Kumherova, have all played some great tennis to achieve promotion.

“We’re looking forward to playing our B team in Division Three East next year.”
