BROMSGROVE Men’s B claimed a narrow win over rivals Droitwich A in Division Two of the Aegon National competition.
Using the team as a development squad, Bromsgrove brought in youngsters George Rogers and Aaron Oakes to play alongside the more experienced duo of Matt Smith and Voitek Niedzwiedz.
In the singles matches, the match ended 2-2 as Smith and Niedzwiedz won but Rogers and Oakes lost.
The doubles ended 1-1 as Smith with Niedzwiedz claimed victory but the pair of Rogers and Oakes lost, leaving the score at 3-3.
In the shoot-out, Bromsgrove put Rogers and Niedzwiedz in the firing line for the singles games and both pulled off stunning 10-6 and 10-4 victories respectively.
Captain Niedzwiedx said: “We knew it would be tough but we wanted to give our juniors the opportunity to play some of the best county players.
“George’s win in the shoot out was sensational as he had lost earlier in the singles to the same opponent.
“To win against a strong local team is a fantastic start.”
The Men’s Aegon A team faired no better as they slumped to a heavy 6-0 defeat to Penns Tennis Club from Staffordshire.
Bromsgrove’s Ladies A kick-started their summer season with the slimmest of victories over Worcester A in Division One of the Herefordshire and Worcestershire League.
Katherine Smedley and Lynn Woolley stepped up from the Ladies B team to support the pairs of Rachel Mack with Jilly Whitcomb and Sally Franks with Tina Manning due to player unavailability.
Each pair won and lost one rubber meaning the score was 3-3 at the end and after the count back of sets won still left the match equal, Bromsgrove took the winning points as they won two more games.
Captain Franks said: “The whole team battled hard and Katherine and Lynn’s win over their opposite pair in three close sets was the icing on the cake to get us off to a great start.”
