Boss wants Bromsgrove Sporting to maintain standards set in emphatic victory over Kidlington

Craig Gibbons 23rd Aug, 2018

DELIGHTED Bromsgrove Sporting boss Brendan Kelly has called on his players to maintain the standards set in the 11-0 thrashing of Kidlington for as long as possible.

The Rouslers have certainly arrived in Southern League Division One Central with a bang, firstly running out 4-1 winners at AFC Dunstable on Saturday followed by the goal-filled encounter at the Victoria Ground on Tuesday night.

Richard Gregory (5), Jason Cowley (2), William Shorrock (2) and Cameron Peters (2) were on the scoresheet in Sporting’s win over a Dunstable side which had been reduced to ten men after just eight minutes.

“We’ve had an excellent start, but it’s only a start,” said Kelly.

“However, those lads have set a standard which I will be asking them to maintain as long as possible.”

What pleased Kelly the most on Tuesday evening was despite going into the break 6-0 up, his players never took their foot off the gas.

“I put it on the lads to not rest on their laurels, not to sit off and keep doing the things I asked them to do,” he added.

“If you sit back you make mistakes and the mentality is in a different mindset so I’m chuffed they kept going.

“Even if Kidlington finished the game with 11 men, it still would have been a high-scoring game, that’s how good we were.

“Mentally we were spot on as the mind can switch off but the intensity was right there until the end.”

Kelly had labelled Sporting’s trip to Dunstable as a ‘baptism of fire’ for life at Step Four on the non-League ladder but the boss was completely happy with the performance.

“For the first 20 to 25 minutes it was very cagey and we looked nervous,” he said.

“Dunstable could have gone in front but once we went ahead that was it – I don’t even remember Reece (Francis) having to make a save.”
