Barnt Green top, Bromsgrove slip to Droitwich - H&W Winter League latest

BARNT Green A lead Division Two of the Women’s Herefordshire & Worcestershire Winter League after beating Stourbridge B 8-2 in a well-fought contest.

Beth Harris and Faye Edwards had to come from a set down to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 against visiting duo Julie Brown and Eleanor Taylor.

A similarly tight contest between Green’s Rachel Scott and Katherine Green and the Stourbridge pairing of Janet Williamson and Helen Walker also required three sets, as the hosts recovered to run out 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 winners.

Harris and Edwards added a second win, beating Williamson and Walker 6-0, 6-3 in straight sets, but the visitors’ Brown and Taylor were 6-3, 7-5 victors over Scott and Green.

In the same division, Bromsgrove B were humbled 8-2 by Droitwich A on home turf.

Successive rubbers were won by Droitwich, with Marelize Yorke and Lisa Pettener-Jones beating Ann Banner and Hannah Weston 6-3, 6-4, before Faye Lovell and Diana Smith saw off Lucy Simper and Claudia Bullock 7-5, 6-1.

Bromsgrove’s Banner and Weston hit back with a three-set win against Lovell and Smith 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, although Simper and Bullock lost 6-4, 6-3 to Yorke and Pettener-Jones in the final match.

In Men’s Division One, in the battle of the David Lloyd clubs, Bromsgrove, thrashed DL Worcester 10-0 to move up to second in the table.

A 6-1, 6-3 win by George Southall and James Nolan against James Douglas-Osborn and George Cook gave DL Bromsgrove a great start, followed by James Troth and Henry Myatt’s 6-2, 6-2 success over David Norton and Andrew Jager.

Southall and Nolan had no problems disposing of Jager and Norton 6-4, 6-1, leaving Troth and Myatt to complete the whitewash 6-2, 6-3 against Douglas-Osborn and Cook.
