Barnt Green Spartak's fixture pile up does not worry boss Singh

BARNT Green Spartak boss GJ Singh is confident having to play catch up will not affect his side’s chances of avoiding the drop from Midland League Division Two.

The Lions have won their last two league games and sit third-from-bottom but have not played for three points since January 13.

It means Singh’s men have only played 13 league games up to now with 17 still to play.

And with Spartak enjoying a good cup run in the Birmingham FA Saturday Vase, Singh stressed he had no worries over a fixture pile up costing his side Step Seven status.

“I am not at all worried about the fixture pile up,” he said.

“The lads have been training twice a week since the bad weather came and I am sure they would rather be playing twice a week.

“From that aspect, we are raring to go in the league.

“We know the position we are in and if we can win another two or three league games we will be looking at the table at a different angle.

“The confidence is there but it is important we keep our feet on the ground and hopefully that will put us in good stead.”

Spartak booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Vase on Saturday with a comprehensive 6-1 victory over Coventry Alliance side Triumph Athletic at The Coppice Ground, home of landlords Highgate United.

The Lions fell behind early doors but goals from Dominic Strevens (3), Mark Steele, Nikinder Uppal & Tory Herbert secured a place in the last eight where they will meet West Midlands (Regional) League Division One side Bustleholme on Saturday.

“It was long overdue that we would give someone a beating,” said Singh.

“The lads showed great character to come from behind and we could have scored ten given the chances we had.

“Bustleholme are a long established side and the good news is their manager has told me he should have a full strength side out which is a bonus.

“We want to test ourselves against the best so we are in for a challenge.”
