Back-to-back wins for in-form Spa

DROITWICH Spa clinched back-to-back wins in Midlands Two West (South) for the first time this season as they defeated Old Yardleians 27-15 last Saturday.

Sam Davenport struck twice, while Dan Wilkinson got the other with a fine solo effort as Spa boosted their survival bid with a superb home victory.

The result means they move out of the bottom two, leapfrogging Old Leamingtonians who they beat 16-15 last week.

Spa’s win over the Leamington side would have been a huge boost for the side, but they did not have wait long to receive a reality check as the visitors struck inside the opening two minutes.

Droitwich knew they had to respond otherwise it would turn out to be a long afternoon and to their credit they dug deep.

They also had a winger in fine form in Davenport to call upon and he soon got in on the act when a chip and chase saw him go in under the posts.

This seemed to spur Duncan Hughes’ men on as Wilkinson then used his pace and power to beat three opposition defenders before going over in the corner. Scott-Walker added the extras to make it 10-3.

Old Yards hit back with a try of their own, but a Chris Danks penalty ensured Spa maintained their seven point lead going in at half time.

Danks was also providing to be a valuable player for Droitwich as he continued to kick his side into good attacking areas of the pitch.

Unfortunately, though, Spa were not able to make the most of it as they struggled in the set piece.

However, the home side’s persistence eventually paid when a good turnover ball by Luke Topping allowed Stephen Poke to gift quick ball to Sam Davenoort.

He then ran the length of the pitch to score under the posts to leave a simple conversion for Ed Wormington to duly dispatch. Wormington added a penalty moments later as Droitwich opened up a 22-10 advantage.

They were still not settled, though, as they went on the hunt for the all-important bonus point try. But it never came their way as Russ Brown went agonisingly close before their opponents scored a try in the last play of the game.
