A CAKE and coffee morning was held at Rednal Hill Junior School for Young Carers’ Awareness Day.

In conjunction with the Carers’ Trust the school’s young carers organised the cake sale, made posters to promote it, baked the cakes and sold them to the parents and pupils, raising £100.

The cash will be put towards paying for a trip for the young carers group to give them a break.

Rednal Hill offers one-to-one support with designated adults where young carers can talk both about their role and any worries they have.

They are taught strategies to help them work through any stress or anxiety to ensure they do not develop bigger and more long-term problems.

There is also a half-termly group where young carers get together with others in the same situation.

Young carers are those under 18 who look after a family member of friend who are ill, disabled or misuses drugs or alcohol – and to identify children who had a caring role within their family unit.

Val Fowke, who oversees Rednal Hill’s young carers, said the school worked with charities to help them with their mental wellbeing.

“Young Carers Awareness Day is also good for children who may not have previously recognised themselves as being a ‘carer’.

“Sometimes if a parent or sibling has had a difficult night the carers come in worrying and can’t concentrate on their school work.

“We can talk their worries through with them and give them their own space to reflect.

“As well as carers, they are also children and there will be times when they can’t make everything right.”

The Young Carers Charity offers additional ongoing help to the child to ensure they and their family receive the appropriate support they need.
