A YOUNG archer from Bromsgrove is on target for the Paris Olympics 2024 following a cash boost from a Rubery councillor.

Matthew Vaughan, 17, was over the moon when Coun Peter McDonald offered some of his divisional funds to help pay for archery equipment and his lessons at National Age Group Academy.

The talented youngster was scouted by a GB coach after winning several archery tournaments across the West Midlands.

Matthew, who attends Solihull School, said: “I first got into the sport four years ago.

“I wasn’t really into rugby or football at school and I was intrigued when I saw Redhill Archers Club inviting people along for archery sessions.

“I jumped at the chance and soon realised I had talent in a sport I loved.”

Matthew’s sights are now firmly set on becoming part of Team GB at the 2024 games.

To improve his skills, he wants to compete in as many international tournaments as he possibly can, starting with the Veronica Cup in Slovenia.

“This means moving out of the cadet class and stepping up to full Olympic distance of 70 metres,

shooting alongside the adult men’s division.

“My aim is to break into the top 10 at one of the international series.”

Matthew practices six times-a-week and works alongside GB coach Kieran Slater, all while balancing his A-Level studies.

“It’s stressful but thanks to the support of Coun McDonald, my coach and my parents I am well on my way to achieving my dreams,” he said

Coun McDonald said he was more than happy to help.

“Archery is one of the few sports which receives hardly any sponsorship,” he added.
