Worcestershire County Council 'inundated' with offers for sites for rapid Covid testing

Rob George 13th Jan, 2021

COUNTY chiefs have been inundated with offers of potential sites where Community Rapid Testing for Covid can be carried out.

Worcestershire has recently seen a rise in Covid infections across the county and part of the response is to expand the ability to quickly identify people who are infectious but do not have symptoms, known as asymptomatic.

The County Council put a call out last week to town and parish councils for indoor buildings such as community centres, village halls or sports halls to undertake rapid result Lateral Flow Testing of asymptomatic people.

So far, more than 100 offers have been received to use sites, mainly town halls, in all parts of the county. The council is processing all the offers and will be in touch with individuals in due course to thank them.

Coun Karen May, cabinet member for Transformation and Commissioning, said: “We’re delighted with the response we’ve had so far from town and parish councils.

“We only put a call out last week for possible sites and we’ve had over 100 offers come in.

“It’s been a real community effort. Like other areas of the Covid response, we’ve seen communities wanting to step up and help the greater good so thank you to everyone who has been in touch.

“We’re working through all the responses and we will respond to everyone individually.”

Expansion of asymptomatic testing will identify more positive cases of Covid-19 and ensure those infected isolate, protecting those who cannot work from home and our vital services.

This programme is crucial given that around one in three people have coronavirus without displaying any symptoms.
