DEMONSTRATORS turned out in force at the Alexandra Hospital on Saturday demanding a halt to budget and funding cuts at the hospital, writes Tom Banner.

More than 100 people were at the protest, which was organised by the Bromsgrove Labour Party.

“We felt conditions over the winter necessitated county wide action,” said spokesman Jimmy Morris-Knight.

“When it comes to the Alex, the list of issues is as long as my arm.”

It always comes down to funding gaps and staff shortages, you end up with a situation where people do not feel comfortable coming to the Alex.”

Among the demonstrators were former NHS nurses and patients angry at government cuts to the NHS and increasing wait times.

Claire Davies, a former nurse, said: “I think one of the biggest issues is chronic under funding of services for older people.

“We have known the population is getting older and older for years now, I was a social worker 20 years ago and it was a problem then.

“We should have invested then to deal with the problems we have now.”

Also attending the rally was Councillor Bill Hartnett, the Leader of Redditch Borough Council. He said:

“This was one of many such rallies around the country on NHS Day.

“The weather may have been wet and cold but the reception from the public was warm we had lots of toots of support from passing cars.

“The NHS needs funding now not only here in Worcestershire but across the country.

“We are seeing too many people on trolleys in corridors and we hear too many reports from doctors saying the NHS is at breaking point.”

Protests were also held outside hospitals in Evesham, Tenbury, Malvern, Worcester and Wyre Forest.
