This week's Bromsgrove and Droitwich Standard letters......

Bromsgrove Editorial 15th Aug, 2020   0

I HAVE never been so disgusted and repelled as I was by Nigel Farage’s YouTube video.

In it he said: “Who is really staying at this 4 Star Hotel.”

He makes a number of false, lying and manipulative claims in what is the worst piece of racist hate propaganda I have ever seen in the UK.

Everybody locally knows that this is not a Hilton Hotel and has not been for some considerable time.

There is no evidence to show that it is a 4-star hotel; it is not “full of illegal immigrants” but simply used to house some asylum seekers including women & children for their own protection.

If young women in Bromsgrove have been harrassed, it is local male youths who are the problem.

This video uses the same kind of behaviour and tactics as Hitler did, and not only has no place in this country but I believe should be prosecuted as hate speech under Section 18 of the Public Order Act 1986.

I’VE noticed an increasing amount of anonymous letters to the editor.

The entire weight and veracity of a letter rests upon the reputation on the individual to whose name it is attached.

Since ancient times the name is equally as important as the contents so that, by writing an anonymous letter, one is in effect disowning its contents and ultimately denying its authenticity.

IS it possible that Nigel Farage is simply trying to stay relevant while keeping his YouTube views up rather than actually believing what comes out of his mouth?

I’d like to think so because that is certainly the lesser of two evils.

Because I cannot fathom how someone can be so insensitive to a sensitive subject.

Many locals knew asylum seekers were being housed at the hotel, as it was mentioned in the Standard months ago, so I’m not sure why he acted like he had stumbled upon a world exclusive.

CAROLYN Wiliams appears confused.

She suggests that the Liberal Democrats are irrelevant in Bromsgrove by quoting the 2017 election results.

Since 2017, the Liberal Democrats came second in the European elections, elected three district councillors and in the 2019 General election came third with 6,779 votes, a 7.9% swing.

Of course, Mr Farage and his Brexit Party didn’t even bother to stand in the general election.

Don’t forget the first two rules of politics- counting and turning up.

THE GRANT for the historic Grade II listed farmhouse and proposals for the building are a welcome win-win situation.

This once beautiful building will be restored to its former glory and also provide much-needed affordable housing.

The accompanying research plans will enable the possible links to the family of King Henry VIII’s wife Catherine of Aragon to be thoroughly investigated.

And with the wealth of history experts and groups Droitwich has this project could not be in a better place.

MANY elderly people are frightened of giving up their independence and going to live in a residential home.

My Mother, Mary Smith was always adamant that she wanted to remain at home.

Sadly, illness made this impossible and she went to live at Breme Residential Home in Bromsgrove.

Far from being unhappy she thrived with the care and attention that she received from their marvellous staff .

She had been lonely at home but now had the company of the other residents and staff members.

She took part and enjoyed the activities which are provided each day.

Breme’s slogan is ‘ Putting Kindness at the heart of our care. ’ How true.

So if you are getting older and feeling less confident than you were and are frightened of needing residential care, my message is -‘don’t worry if Breme House is a typical residential care home, you will be happy’.

I AM pleased that the Leader of Bromsgrove District Council has given support to my request that as leader she sends a letter to the Housing Secretary Robert Jenrick calling upon him to implement urgent measures to protect renters as the temporary ban on evictions comes to a close at the end of next month.

Renters who have accrued arrears due to Covid-19 need to receive eviction protection until the pandemic is over and to introduce legislation to make this happen.

With the leader giving support to the extension of the ban on evictions the Housing Minister will realise this is not about politics but the wellbeing of all those who have been furloughed and experiencing financial hardship.

It is estimated that 60 per cent of renters have suffered income loss.

As it currently stands, the future for renters in the District is incredibly precarious — with mounting financial pressure and job insecurity caused by the pandemic leaving many struggling to pay rent.

Hopefully, the minister will take seriously the call.
