The Bromsgrove singers entertaining their neighbours after they Clap for Our Carers

GOING to our doorsteps to applaud frontline NHS staff and key workers has become a regular date in our diaries at 8pm every Thursday during the lockdown.

And now singers from across the district have been doing their bit to entertain their neighbours after the ‘Clap for our Carers’.

In Wildmoor Lane, Catshill, Mitzy, aka Melissa Butler, performed for her neighbours last night.

The 36-year-old, who works as a medical secretary at the Alexandra Hospital, usually sings around pubs and clubs but with all venues shut because of Coronavirus she currently has no stages to perform on.

She has been out with her two children – Ollie, seven, and Jamie, four – to applaud her NHS colleagues and other key workers every Thursday night and then her husband Adrian suggested she give singing a go to entertain the neighbours.

So before and after the 8pm applause last night, Mitzy belted out classics from artists, including Michael Jackson, Lewis Capaldi and Bonnie Tyler.

Her street was packed with people – all maintaining their social distancing on their doorsteps – and they were delighted with her set.

Mitzy said it was a very emotional performance that – with the demand for more – went on for longer than expected.

“I was just going to sing one or two songs but ended up performing for 45 minutes.

“I was absolutely buzzing afterwards – I struggled to get to sleep.”

On her Facebook page, where the video has had thousands of views, Mitzy thanked everyone who listened, clapped and cheered her last night.

And she now intends to sing a few songs every Thursday, adding her guitarist nextdoor neighbour may also be convinced to join in.

And 15-year-old Betsy Wright, who lives at the Golden Lion in Charford, also wowed locals with her vocals last night.

Landlord John Sutton said: “She wanted to sing for everyone in the local area and has been practising every day.

“There was a really good reaction from people to her performance – from those living nearby and the residents at the care home on the corner.”

The video below was posted on the Golden Lion’s Facebook page and has had lots of views, likes and shares afterwards.

Betsy will now be going out to entertain her neighbours every Thursday – after the Clap for Our Carers.
