SUPPORT staff from South Bromsgrove High School were among those recognised as part of a UK-wide celebration of the invaluable contribution they make to pupils’ education.
UNISON organised the ‘Stars in Our Schools’ event to promote the wonderful work school support staff do every day, and to make sure the world knows just how vital they are to every school.
UNISON Branch Secretary Jim Price said: “This annual UK-wide celebration day is a great opportunity for pupils, parents and teachers to promote the work of their support staff and thank them for their outstanding contribution.”
He added it took a whole team to make a school a safe and happy place for children to learn.
School support staff help children learn, keep children safe and healthy and make sure schools run smoothly.
There are a variety of support staff roles, including caterers, admin staff, finance officers, teaching assistants, librarians, ICT technicians, parent support advisers, and more. They have been labelled the ‘unsung heroes’.
Those honoured in the celebration from South included Wendy Pemberton, a technology technician and Julie Smith, a mathematics learning assistant.
South headteacher Chris Smith, said “This is fantastic news. It is brilliant that the hard work of our colleagues in the Support Staff is recognised in this way.
The dedication that they show to the students and teachers every day means that we can continue to offer the best
possible education for our young people.”
Wendy and Julie attended a reception at the Guildhall in Worcester to receive their awards.
