Restoration work on an important wetland nature reserve between Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa is under way

RESTORATION work on an important wetland nature reserve between Bromsgrove and Droitwich Spa is under way after the Worcestershire Wildlife Trust (WWT) received a £58,944 funding boost.

The Biffa Award will help restore the islands in front of the lapwing hide at the WWT’s Upton Warren nature reserve.

The pools which provide vital habitat for a wide range of birds like lapwing, osprey and black-tailed Godwit were built more than 20 years ago and have gradually eroded over time.

Eleanor Reast, the trust’s conservation officer, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Biffa Award for enabling this essential work to happen.

“It really will make a difference, both to the birds that breed at and visit Upton Warren as well as the volunteers who work so hard to maintain it.

“This funding gives us a fantastic opportunity to restore the islands and pools in this area of the reserve”.

The work began on Monday and will take around a fortnight.

“The hide overlooking the restoration area will be open during the work although birdwatching opportunities will be limited.

“All other hides will also be open,” added Eleanor.

Upton Warren has seen significant investment over the past years, with the major restoration of The North Moors pools back in 2015, when a new birdwatching hide was installed and the 2017 restoration of The Flashes Pools.
