Record turn-out and amount raised for charity at Mortons' Tree of Light in Northfield

THE TREE of Light memorial service at Northfield’s Mortons Funeral Directors saw a record turn-out and a staggering £1,100 raised for good causes.

The event – held on the first Sunday of December every year – gives people the chance to remember loved ones they have lost and share their memories.

This year more than 900 people attended to hear carols, songs and readings, sharing poignant moments of reflection with others in similar situations.

The cash raised, with donations still coming in, will be divided between the Salvation Army and MIND.

In return for a donation, people wrote personal messages on a Memorial Star which have been placed on the giant Christmas tree outside Mortons’ Northfield office.

The tree remains in place until January so those unable to make the event and who want to make a donation and dedicate a star can still contact Mortons which has offices in Rubery and Cotteridge, as well as Northfield.

Sarah Case, Mortons’ managing director, “We are simply staggered by the generosity of the people who came to the service, and those who were unable to attend but still wanted to put a star on the tree and make a contribution.

“The service seems to be getting more popular every year, and to see a record 900 people here remembering their loved ones was a truly touching experience.

“The whole service is all about sharing memories – we saw some tears, but we also saw lots of laughter and smiles as people came together to reflect.

“The spirit of those who donated is humbling, and we would like to offer a heartfelt ‘thank you’ to every single person who helped make this such a memorable day.”

Those wanting to contact Mortons for a memorial star to be completed on their behalf can email [email protected] or call 0121 476 9111.
