Police issue warning after flurry of courier frauds in Worcestershire in the past few days

Bromsgrove Editorial 2nd Oct, 2020   0

A WARNING has been issued by police after a flurry of courier fraud attempts on Worcestershire residents in the past few days.

Some of the attempts were successful while in others the recipients rumbled the scammers’ ploy.

Fraudsters often deliberately target older and vulnerable people and the police have urged people with elderly and vulnerable neighbours, friends or relatives to pass on the warning.

It works by the bogus callers phoning and claiming to be from the police.

They then either ask for bank cards, personal details or for people to transfer money or funds.

Det Insp Emma Wright from West Mercia Police said: “Always remember that no police officer from any force or department will ever ask you to hand over money or transfer funds, regardless of their name or unit.

“I would like to reassure the community that we are investigating these crimes and want to hear from anyone who has been contacted in this way”

“This scam can be very elaborate, very convincing and cruel.

“If you think someone is trying to scam you, tell someone straight away.

“Don’t be pressured. Give yourself time to stop and think.”

Scams should be reported to the police on 101.

If the crime is still in progress – for example if bank details have been provided, cards or cash handed over, planning to visit the bank or the caller has arranged for someone to visit to collect items – people should call 999.

“Please remember the police will never contact you asking for your bank card or cash.

“If someone does, it’s a scam – provide no details and hand nothing over, hang up, wait ten minutes then call the police,” added DI Wright.
