Police in Worcestershire set up new initiative to catch drunk and drug drivers

Bromsgrove Editorial 12th Jun, 2019   0

SPECIAL Constables in Worcestershire marked last weekend – dubbed National Specials Weekend – by carrying out traffic stops in connection with suspected drink driving or drug offences.

The initiative was part of a UK-wide celebration of the volunteer officers and the part they play in keeping people and property safe.

Specials are men and women who commit a minimum of 16 hours a month and play a key role in local policing.

They have the same powers in law as regular police officers, including the power of arrest.

West Mercia Police currently has 164 Special Constables that contributed an astonishing 52,909 hours of volunteering between April 2018 and March 2019.
