COUNTY residents have been warned they could be fined for breaking the Government’s ‘Rule of Six’ Coronavirus clampdown which comes into effect from Monday (September 14).

West Mercia Police chiefs issued the warning after Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced gatherings of more than six people will be illegal, albeit with some exceptions.

While more than six people will be unable to gather in homes, both indoors and outdoors and public places like parks, bars and cafes, the new rules do not apply to schools, workplaces, weddings and funerals.

Groups larger than six will be dispersed by police. Failure to comply with an officer’s efforts to engage, explain and encourage will see a £100 fine, doubling on each further offence up to £3,200.

Speaking at at a Downing Street press conference, the Prime Minister said action was needed to stop the rise in Coronavirus cases. The UK saw 2,659 cases recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the number of cases nationwide to 355,219.

Eight deaths from COVID-19 were recorded in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of deaths to 41,594.

“These measures are not another national lockdown,” the Prime Minister said.

“The whole point of them is to avoid a second national lockdown.”

Speaking after the Government’s announcement Chief Supt Sue Thomas, said: “Nationally we’re starting to see a rise in infections and so it’s vital that each and every one of us plays our part in reducing the spread of Coronavirus by following the regulations and guidelines the Government have put in place.

“Over the last seven months the vast majority of people across Herefordshire, Shropshire and Worcestershire have done the right thing and adhered to the guidelines and we are sure this will remain the case.

“However, we will continue to be visible in our communities and we will speak to those seen breaking the rules.

“Where it’s appropriate to do so we will use our powers and enforce the fine.”
