A CHARITY which helps breast cancer patients after surgery has received a £4,000 boost from the outgoing Bromsgrove District Council chairman, writes Sophie Nixon.

Coun Caroline Spencer handed over the cash she raised during her year of office to Bosom Friends at Bromsgrove Council House last Thursday, July 18.

The fund-raising was done through a variety of events including a civic dinner, Caribbean and Thai nights along with fish and chips on a barge.

Coun Spencer said: “Unfortunately cancer touches so many people’s lives, whether you are a patient or a family member.

“To have this support group in Bromsgrove is marvellous and I am delighted to have raised so much money for them – thanks to everyone who supported me over the last year.”

Bosom Friends is putting the cash towards nipple tattooing equipment as well as other ongoing costs.

A Breast Care nurse has recently undergone training in nipple tattooing, where the patient’s areola and nipple are given a hyper-realistic replacement using ink.

As well as reducing the appearance of the damaged tissue it also helps the patient’s mental recovery.

Currently all patients have to go to Worcester for the procedure but the goal is to also be able to run tattooing clinics at Bromsgrove’s Princess of Wales Community Hospital too.

The charity is also aiming, with pending permission from the health trust, to refurbish the counselling room at the Alexandra Hospital which is in dire need of a facelift to make it brighter and improve the atmosphere.

Bosom Friends is run by the Alexandra’s breast care specialist nurses who attend each meeting to provide practical advice, support, up-to-date information and links to other healthcare professionals.

A foundation spokesperson said a breast cancer diagnosis was a daunting experience.

“We know it may be hard to walk through the doors for the first time.

“So, if you are considering giving the group a try, but feel anxious about that first step, do not hesitate to contact us.”

The Bosom Friends support group meetings are held on the third Tuesday of each month from 7pm to 8.30pm.

The next session is on the August 20 at the Bromsgrove Hotel.
