New 'child' figure put outside Barnt Green school to slow down motorists

A STATUETTE of a pupil has been put outside St Andrew’s First School in Barnt Green in a bid to get drivers in the area to slow down.

The installation is one of a number in the district aimed at being a powerful reminder for parents to drive with caution around schools when they drop off and pick up their children.

The statuette has even been painted the same colours as the St Andrew’s uniform.

Rubery councillor Peter McDonald, who has campaigned to get others in the past, used around £350 of his divisional fund to cover the cost of the figure.

“They are now widely accepted as one of the most effective ways of slowing drivers down,” said Coun McDonald.

“It’s taken a long time to get one outside St Andrew’s First School but myself and parish councillor and Labour district council candidate Harrison Rone-Clarke are extremely delighted it’s there now.”

There are a few statuettes around Worcestershire but Coun McDonald and Coun Rone-Clarke both said they would like to see more.

“The county council should consider investing, because I believe all schools should have them in place,” added Coun McDonald.
