WITH temperatures set to rise even further this week, Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is warning members of the public to be extra careful around rivers, quarries and lakes.
Drowning in the UK is one of the leading causes of accidental death with more than 300 people drowning after tripping or falling into water each year.
Group Commander Mick Cadman said: “Although the water might be inviting in this hot weather it is also very dangerous.
“Even strong swimmers can find themselves in difficulty as the water can cause a cold-shock response.
“This can cause your heart to behave abnormally and result in sudden death.”
If someone jumps into cold water they can also get muscle cramp, which is another reason why people drown.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service are urging people to stay clear of the water’s edge and especially at night time.
They say if you’ve consumed alcohol it’s best to stay away from it completely and never enter any water to try and help a person or animal – always call 999 first.
