Group launches appeal to end period poverty for girls and young women in South West Birmingham

AN APPEAL has been launched by the Red Box Project Birmingham South West group for items for girls and young women to ensure they don’t miss their education because of their periods.

The scheme was started last year when the seriousness and scale of ‘Period Poverty’ across the UK hit the national headlines.

Shocking statistics show one in ten girls or women aged 14 to 21 in Britain cannot afford sanitary towels or tampons.

The Birmingham South West group is looking for dark knickers size eight to 20, along with sanitary towels, tampons and cardboard applicators.

A number of donation points have been launched across South West Birmingham, including Sainsbury’s in Northfield.

The group is also hoping to get boxes of items put in schools across South West Birmingham during the first few weeks of the new school term.
