Gritters heading out across Bromsgrove and Rubery as temperatures plummet below freezing

Tristan Harris 3rd Jan, 2019 Updated: 3rd Jan, 2019

THE GRITTERS will be out across Worcestershire this evening with temperatures expected to drop as low as -4°C in some parts of the county.

The lorries will be out from 6pm as the mercury plummets.

Mild conditions throughout the festive period meant the gritters were only out on two occasions – Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day and tonight will be the coldest it has been in a while.

Coun Alan Amos, Worcestershire County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways said: “Throughout the holiday period we had our teams on standby, ready to head out in all weathers to help keep us safe on the roads.

“It stayed relatively mild but tonight it’s expected to be cold so the gritters will be going out.

“And remember that even though a road is gritted it may not be safe to drive at normal speeds so people should drive with care.”

The County Council’s road maintenance and gritting teams are always on hand to clear drains and gullies as well as gritting the roads, and clearing snow if needed.

Worcestershire County Council stockpiled 14,701 tonnes of salt for this winter, with a further 5,000 tonnes in emergency stocks should the weather be particularly bad for long periods of time.
