Forget the snow, our planet is warming - Bromsgrove Eco Action column

Bromsgrove Editorial 5th Feb, 2021   0

EXTINCTION Rebellion has arrived in Bromsgrove.

You may have seen our silent vigils in December. Look out for XR Bromsgrove Bees coming soon to our High Street.

We aim to explain why ordinary people from our town have joined together to sound the alarm and call for action on the Climate and Ecological emergency.

The effect of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, methane and water vapour has been recognised since the 19th century.

The extra warming of our oceans, soils and atmosphere is now equivalent to the heat from 400,000 atomic bombs every day.

This has resulted in 2015 to 2020 being the hottest six years on record.

We have seen the devastating floods, including in Worcester and Bewdley, droughts, pollution, wildfires and melting ice-caps.

None of this can be wished away by target-setting: carbon emissions have to stop.

As Mark Carney (former head of the Bank of England) said: “Net zero carbon isn’t a slogan, it’s an imperative of

climate physics.

“This cannot be bought off and won’t go away if we ignore it.”

The International Monetary Fund said: “Simply put, climate is the biggest risk the world faces.”

And doctors warned in the Lancet that we ‘threaten the future of all children through carbon pollution’.

From our annual Red Nose Day campaigns, we know that our country cares about children.

The thought that their futures are being threatened is a frightening one.

It is part of what motivates us to give, to act, to protest.

If you are not sure that global warming is real, ask us about the climate denial industry or do your own research.

From reliable sources we understand the organised efforts by big corporations, media barons and the super-wealthy to cast doubt on the science.

We can trace this back to oil company ExxonMobil scientist James Black’s warning in 1977 of the irreparable damage their activities would do to our planet.

As David Attenborough says in his book A Life on Our Planet: “We have one final chance to create

the perfect home for ourselves and restore the wonderful world we inherited.

“All we need is the will to do so.”

That’s why Extinction Rebellion was formed in 2018, calling on the Government to (1) tell the truth about the climate and ecological emergency (2) act now to halt biodiversity loss and halt greenhouse gas emissions by 2025 and (3) create, and be led by, a Citizens’ Assembly representing us all, like in Northern Ireland on abortion.

With solar power schemes now offering the “cheapest electricity in history” we need to act now.

So whether you want to change the world or just need to talk to people who understand your fears for

our children, join us.
