VOLUNTEERS are being sought across Worcestershire to help promote fire safety to their local communities, writes Sophie Wheeler.
Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is looking to recruit people from all walks of life who aspire to make a difference in their areas by promoting safety schemes aimed at people are most at risk.
Volunteers in the service can do anything from giving talks to school children, helping raise fire safety awareness among pensioners, attending local festivals and even playing a casualty in firefighters’ training sessions.
Jane Walsh, a mother of four who works four days a week for an environmental health department, has committed to volunteering for a minimum of six hours every month.
She said: “I may not be on the front line but as a community volunteer I’m sure that the advice and information we give saves peoples lives.
“It’s an incredible role and so varied. It’s actually something for me and not just the people in the community who we’re helping and advising.
“I really feel as though I’m making a difference.”
Jane has also taken part in a fire-safety awareness campaign to help prevent any further high-rise disasters since the Grenfell tragedy.
