A GROUP of teenagers at a Northfield academy were given the chance to become urban designers for the day thanks to a programme set up by an English rugby legend.

The teenagers from the Edge Academy took part in a day’s work experience during a career taster day with Dallaglio RugbyWorks (DRW) set up by ex England rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio to help young people who have been excluded from mainstream education.

The event for the young people who were all aged between 14 and 15 was organised by St Modwen Homes and took place at the developer’s headquarters in Longbridge.

The day gave the teenagers a chance to design their own residential development.

Gareth Shuttleworth of DRW, said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to St Modwen Homes for hosting the career taster day with the Edge Academy.

“It was fantastic to see our young people responding so positively to a different environment and new faces.

“We look forward to continuing our partnership with St. Modwen Homes.”

DRW is an intensive long-term skills development programme based on the values of rugby with the aim of steering teenagers outside of mainstream education into sustained education, employment and training.

Emma Laventine, assistant technical coordinator at St Modwen Homes, said: “We aimed to show that house building has roles for everybody no matter their skill set.

“Hopefully we will have inspired some of the group to follow one of these careers.”
