CROWDS cheered as Bromsgrove’s new Aldi on Birmingham Road was announced officially open by Olympic silver-medallist Tom Mitchell.

The Team GB rugby sevens star, who won the medal in Rio 2016 and took bronze with England in this year’s Commonwealth Games, officially cut the ribbon at 8am on August 9.

He then greeted every customer who walked through the door and posed for photos with local residents.

“It’s great to be here,” said Tom.

“Aldi is one of my main sponsors and I’m very proud of that.

“As an athlete I’m all about promoting healthy and nutritious food and Aldi does that brilliantly.”

The first 30 shoppers through the door received a complimentary bag full of fresh fruit and vegetables from the Super 6 range as part of the supermarket’s ‘Get Set to Eat Fresh’ scheme to encourage the nation to eat fresh British produce.

Customer Roy Jones, aged 67, who lives on Broad Street, said: “This is the first time I’ve ever been to an Aldi. I thought I’d come along and see what all the fuss was about.”

The store has brought 30 new jobs to the town which have been filled by local people.

Sally Dale, who works at an accountancy across the road from the Aldi, said: “It’s great for the community and I can’t wait to be able to shop here.”

The store will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am to 4pm on Sunday.
