A BROMSGROVE youngster was given the surprise of his life when he was chosen from hundreds of entries to take on Bear Grylls at his live show in Birmingham.
William Morton has been a member of 7th Bromsgrove Scouts in Finstall for the last three years, under the watchful eye of scout leader Mark Graham.
He was going to see the show on Saturday (October 22) at the Genting Arena, with his mum, Andrea and sister Kathrine but he was unaware his sister had entered him in a competition to get the chance to set up a tent on the main stage in front of the survival expert himself.
Nervous
Out of all the youngsters who were entered the 14-year-old was chosen alongside just one other and managed to put up the tent quicker than Bear Grylls.
Andrea said: “He didn’t know at first. He just thought we were going to see the show so when he found out he was really nervous.
“We walked in to the arena and he saw all the people and said ‘Oh my God’.
“He did really well and they treated us like VIPs the whole time so it was a really great night.
“Meeting Bear Grylls was amazing and it was a life time opportunity. He is a genuine person and a role model to all scouts.
“The Scouts has given Will the opportunity to take part in activities and learn new skills that he would never have done .
“Without the time and commitment that Mark and his team put in non of this would have happened.”
“Will has done so well and achieved so much including recently being presented with his gold chief scout award.
“I am so proud.”
