A BROMSGROVE entrepreneur who hosted a live Internet quiz to entertain people during their COVID-19 quarantining has raised almost £100,000 for the NHS Charities Together.
Laura Jones launched her family-run business ‘Eventures’ in April 2016, delivering quizzes, themed afternoon teas, celebrity Q&A evenings and outdoor cinema events for corporate, non-profit and social organisations.
She was planning her business’ fourth anniversary event this month but instead found herself surrounding by cancelled bookings because of coronavirus.
But the new mum who relies on her the income generated by the business decided to move her quizzes online during the Government’s lockdown, starting with a virtual quiz based on hit TV sitcom Friends.
She was hoping a few hundred people might sign up and pay the small entry fee to generate a modest income and keep her busy during the quarantine hours.
But, after broadcasting the event live on Facebook and YouTube, around 130,000 people joined in with the quiz, including players in China, America, Dubai, Canada, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Netherlands and New Zealand.
Donations, made via a JustGiving page, generated £92,500 and further donations since have taken it through the £95,000 barrier.
Laura said: “I recognised the potential for these events to raise money for the NHS, to give something back to those who are working so hard at the moment.
“However, I never dreamed so much money would be raised in such a short time.
“We should soon smash the £100,000 mark and then it will be onward and upward with each new quiz night.”
The cash is being donated to NHS Charities Together so it can support NHS staff and volunteers caring for COVID-19 patients.
Through Eventures Laura is hoping to keep the world entertained throughout its lockdowns – she has decided to hold a virtual quiz every week.
This Friday’s (April 3) will have a Disney theme and all funds raised from these events will go to NHS Charities Together.
