Bromsgrove District Council leader refuses to step down over bin-gate

BROMSGROVE District Council leader Coun Geoff Denaro said the district’s missed bin collections issue was already been investigated and he said he would not be stepping down from his role.

Coun Denaro was responding to two motions put forward at Wednesday’s full district council meeting.

Coun Steve Colella said: “We need an urgent investigation into the recent failings of the waste collection service and I ask the council and its leader to support my notice of motion.

“Once we have finished looking into the matter we can then make the findings public and finally put this all behind us.

“It’s the right thing to do.”

And, putting forward his motion, Coun Michael Thompson said the leader should resign due to his ‘utter incompetence’.

“I have no doubt that the bin crisis is just the start and there will be many more problems to come if the leader of this council does not step down.”

Coun Denaro hit back at his critics by saying an investigation was already well underway and the situation was ‘under-control’.

“I want to reassure everybody that we doing our best to get to the bottom of this and make sure it doesn’t happen again.

“I have already spoke with officers about investigating the matter and they will be presenting the council with a full report before the end of the year.

“I cannot support Coun Colella’s motion because there is simply no need as we are already doing something about it.”

Both motions were defeated after being put to the vote.
