AN AUTHOR has created a children’s story inspired by the badgers in her Bromsgrove garden.

Margaret Gardner wrote The Badgers of Briarwood after watching the creatures’ antics.

Her dream of creating the book became a reality when she enlisted an artist friend of hers – Maggie Davies – who is originally from Worcestershire but now lives and works in Devon.

Margaret said: “The story only existed in random scribblings, until I persuaded my long term friend Maggie to come on board as collaborator and illustrator.”

Maggie is best known for her vibrant abstract cityscapes but has relished the opportunity to use a traditional storybook style for the Badgers.

The story itself centres on Margaret Mary and her faithful friends, one-eyed teddy bear Eddy and Dog who go on an adventure to find the fearsome badgers who are the stuff of local legend.

Despite warnings, brave Dog and timid little Eddy venture into the jungle led by a determined Margaret Mary where they confront their fears and learn the value of friendship and trust.

Margaret said: “It is a book for sharing with children and grown-ups of all ages.”

It is available at Waterstones and on Amazon – just search for ‘Badgers of Briarwood’.
