Boy in dashcam 'near miss' on Bromsgrove's A38 and his mum meet up with fire chief

THE YOUNG cyclist involved in the ‘near miss’ on the busy A38 in Bromsgrove and his mum have met up with fire chief Robert Allen who posted the shocking CCTV footage as a warning.

We reported the incident on our website on Monday morning after the incident on Sunday which Mr Allen tagged us in.

He tweeted The Standard with the footage and the message: “I wasn’t sure whether to post this but if it stops a child from being killed on the road it’s worth it!

“Today a child rode out in front of me, across the dual track, without looking!

“Thankfully I was driving under the speed limit and reacted quickly!”

Now the child and his mum have come forward to meet the Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service group commander.

A fire service spokesperson said: “Last night the boy in the dashcam footage and his mum asked to meet the fire chief who had been driving the vehicle.

“It was a very positive outcome to a potentially tragic event and HWFRS continue to have contact with the family.”

They added naming and shaming was never the priority, but HWFRS Group Commander Rob Allen is now confident the teen cyclist will be more cautious by road, that other children will benefit from the warning, and that drivers will consider their speed and concentration #positiveoutcomes

Below is the tweet and the footage.

Mr Allen said earlier this week: “It’s perfect summer holiday weather for kids to be enjoying being out and about on their bikes – but I shared this footage to reinforce the messages about staying safe and being vigilant while cycling on, or crossing over, main roads, and also wearing a cycling helmet.

“Whatever your age, make the most of summer cycling, but keep it safe on the bikes.”

It is hoped any young people seeing the footage will take heed of the warning and that parents of children who will be out on their bikes over the school summer holidays will pass the message on.
