Appeal for host families to help young people from Bromsgrove in crisis

Bromsgrove Editorial 20th May, 2019   0

PEOPLE are being urged to join a scheme to help young people in crisis.

Two Host Recruitment Events are being held by The Basement Project in Bromsgrove and Redditch Nightstop during Volunteer Week in June.

The aim is to raise awareness of the need for emergency accommodation for young people in crisis in the Bromsgrove area.

Anyone is welcome to come along to the events at The Basement Project on Hanover Street, Bromsgrove, from 6pm to 8pm on June 3, and at Redditch Nightstop at the Old Needleworks, Redditch, at 2pm on June 6. There is no need to book, and light refreshments will be provided.

Sharon Holtom, volunteer coordinator at Redditch Nightstop, and Kelly Turner, The Basement Project’s community fund-raiser will both be on hand to provide further information on both charities and what is involved in being a host.

Kelly said: “Young people come to the Basement for support with a wide range of issues when they have reached crisis point.

“Often, returning home is not a viable option and so Nightstop’s host families are invaluable as they provide a meal, a bed and a safe environment for a night or two until we can work with the young person to establish their next steps and a longer term solution.”

There are currently no host families in Bromsgrove so the charities hope the events will encourage people find out more and get involved.

Sharon added: “Families who currently host young people in need will also be available at the events to talk about their experiences and why they choose to host, as well as to answer any questions.

“Our host families are vital for the charity to support young people.”

There are currently eight host families – two help with supported lodgings on a longer term basis and there are six emergency hosts to help young people as the need arises.

The charities help young people access emergency accommodation and assist them with finding their own accommodation and support them to maintain their tenancies.

Kelly and Sharon will also have a stall at the Volunteer Fair at Bromsgrove Market on June 18 where people can speak to them if they have any questions or are interested in hosting.
