Ambitious plans unveiled for state-of-the-art Droitwich Spa Heritage and History Trail

PLANS have been unveiled to create a new augmented reality (AR) heritage trail to bring Droitwich Spa’s history and heritage to life through an interactive mobile phone app.

But those behind it are currently applying for funding from Wychavon District Council and need Standard readers’ help to make it happen.

They want people to show their support for the idea by filling in a survey about what they would like to see on it. The app would be free and available on both Android and IOS devices.

People would walk around the trail and find out more about the town’s history through virtual guides, photographs, 3D imaging, videos, multiple choice quizzes, signposted YouTube links and other features.

Sarah Davies, Droitwich Spa Heritage Centre’s joint heritage manager with Catherine Finn, said the town would also be breaking new ground as there was nothing like this in other nearby towns or cities.

“It would be educational, raise awareness of and interest in the rich historical heritage of the town, and will get people outside to enjoy the mental health benefits of the outdoors.

“Families could undertake the activity together enjoying an entertaining, inclusive experience and being free it would make it accessible to all, including those who are isolated, vulnerable, disabled and on low incomes.”

She added the state-of-the-art experience would also appeal to a youthful audiences, encouraging them to find out more about the town’s past and would benefit local businesses when tourists came to do the trail.

The survey asks people what they would like to see and residents can also help by emailing a statement of interest or support. Messages could include how they think it would benefit people and groups and mention historical buildings, places, statues, mosaics, points of interest and events they would like to see featured.

Among the mooted places are the Old Brine Baths and St Richard’s House, the Lido, the High Street, Star Yard, the Norbury Theatre, Priory House, The Old Cock Inn, St Peter’s Church, St Andrew’s Church, St Augustine’s Church, St Nicholas Church, Sacred Heart Church, Tower Hill Pump Station, Gurney Lane Pump remains, Droitwich Canal and Vines Park, St Richard’s Statue, the site of the Roman Fort and Villa, Raven Hotel and the Edward Winslow Statue,
