Singing a song of thanks

Our Busy Bee Appeal has now raised more than £6,000 to establish new bee-keeping cooperatives in Kitwobee in Northern Uganda. The money we have already raised is enough to set up 60 new cooperatives each employing ten people and supporting as many as 3,000 more.

New equipment is on its way to the region and some of the new cooperatives have already been set up. The people of Kitwobee are so grateful for our support that they have sent a short video of thanks - recorded by charity workers from relief organisation CORD who are helping us with our project.

Mike Reynaud preparing for the LA Marathon

Mike Reynaud wil run the LA Marathon for the Observer Standard Busy Bee appeal

The Coventry Observer’s former Promotions Manager, Mike Reynaud, 35, left the company in 2005 to study for his MBA at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. However, he has stayed in touch with local news via our website (www.coventryobserver.co.uk) and was moved into action when he read about our Busy Bee Appeal.

To date Observer Standard Newspapers have raised 6000 pounds for refugees in war-torn Uganda and Mike is hoping that by running the Los Angeles Marathon on the 2nd March, he’ll be able to help us reach our target of 10,000 pounds by getting sponsorship through his webpage www.justgiving.com/mikereynaud.

Thousands of people are living in makeshift camps in Uganda with many families left fatherless because so many men have been killed. Many have no source of income and are relying on aid groups to keep them alive.

Every penny of the money raised will help the people ...

The new year will bring a better life for more than 400 families in northern Uganda thanks to our Busy Bee appeal.

Northern Uganda Sep 2007

Ugandan Family of Eight

With the money the appeal has raised so far we have been able to set up 40 new bee-keeping cooperatives in the Kitgum area each providing income to support almost 2,500 adults and children.
The appeal has brought in more than £4,000 so far and an anonymous donation of £800 was given specially to fund a crucial piece of equipment called a centrifugal machine, which will support many cooperatives and allow even more to be set up.

It is some weeks since we have updated readers on the progress of the appeal because of problems with travel and communication in northern Uganda because of the floods which hit in September. But new hives and equipment are now in place and, while some crops have been hit by the flooding, it is believed the impact on the bee-keepers will not be too great as all the apiaries survived intact.

Getting busy for our new bee appeal

24.07.018.NC2

We want to buzz into action with an appeal which we hope will transform hundreds of lives in Uganda.
We want to take advantage of a lull in hostilities while peace talks go on in civil war-torn Northern Uganda, to get busy helping some of the thousands of people who have been made homeless by the fighting.
Thousands of people are living in makeshift camps, many families left fatherless because so many men have been killed. Many have no source of income and are relying on aid groups to keep them alive.
But we can help by creating a business which will provide these displaced people with the chance to earn money, produce a nutritious food and help the environment - and it’s all about bees.
We want to launch an appeal to help the people in the camps set up beekeeping cooperatives. This is an idea which has already ...
