TWO MALAWI international runners were surprise entrants into this year's Bromsgrove Carnival road race, smashing the course record by two whole minutes.

The pair, who are based at the University of Gloucestershire whilst training for this year's Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, decided to enter the Timberhonger 10k. Winner Chauncey Master came home in 30mins 42sec and fellow countryman Francis Kahne finished five seconds behind him.

Race director Mark Graham said: "To see them run was incredible, and a real privilege to have them running here in Bromsgrove. “We’ll be watching out for them in Glasgow.”

Almost 400 runners completed the challenging Timberhonger course and were rewarded with a carnival medal and a well-earned drink at the finish.

Sian Khan, who runs for the Birchfield club, was the first home in the women's race with an impressive time of 38mins 40secs, taking the prestigious Ladies Berewick of Timberhonger Trophy.

In the Children’s race, Joshua Wiseman and Emily Bibby were victorious in the 11 to 14 category, George Dale and Ellie Johnson were first in the eight to ten section and Finn Hibbett and Hannah Dale won the sevens and under.

The young athletes were cheered around the 1,500m course to collect their finishers’ medals.

It is hoped the races will have raised more than £3,000 for the Friends of the Princess of Wales Hospital, Primrose Hospice and the Basement Project.
